Sanabria is located in the northwest corner of Castilla y León in the province of Zamora. It reaches the west of the province of Ourense, south the beautiful Portuguese region of Tras-os-Montes and Portuguese Natural Park Montezinho, east Castilian plateau and north remote and isolated Leon region of Cabrera Baja separated peaks Faeda and Vizcondillo.

It is a small region with villages scattered through the valleys of the rivers or on the slopes, all very close together. You know that there is no city that is called Sanabria, but all people carry the nickname of the region below his. Eg. Trefacio de Sanabria

Alta y Baja Sanabria

We could consider two very distinct areas, the Lower and Upper Sanabria, separated both by Padornelo Portilla. Alta Sanabria, with many Galician influences are closest towns to Galicia (Padornelo, Lubián, Chanos, Hermisende, Porto, and smaller) in them a mixture of Galician, Castilian and Portuguese is spoken in this area. Lately it has become one of the most important production areas based electric power generating wind turbines.

And the whole valley of Baja Tera be considered with its tributaries (Trefacio, Truchas and Castro). The most significant populations are Puebla de Sanabria, El Puente, Trefacio, San Justo, San Martin, Vigo, Ribadelago …..

Lago de Sanabria

Their main source of income is tourism. In general the tourist area is formed by the Rio Tera, with Lake as the most important element. Her beauty makes it a imcoparable framework for a holiday away from big cities and in the midst of nature.

very mountainous area with an average altitude of over 1,000 meters. It is covered with large areas of deep oak, chestnut plantations, small green meadows and wetlands to the river banks with Poplars, salgueras, ash and trade (humeiros).

In Sanabria was no pine trees, although it seems that foresters insisted in the past replant burned areas in oak with pine.

Everything revolves around the Lake, is the epicenter of tourism sanabrés not in vain is the largest of the peninsula, tourism is the most important source of income in the region. No care is the area with development aid and disappeared farming and traditional gnaderas. Development programs applied to the area with European funds have not had the impact they should.

Lake for years he was not given any importance, to the point that in the 50s was thought to make a transfer to bring this water to salmantino field. To this should raise the lake level about six meters, which would inundate Ribadelago and would not exist today, it would be covered by the waters. Fortunately the project was not carried out, and in 1978 the "Natural Park" area declared

Today the reality is different and Lake is in a good location, which remains at a very acceptable environmental conditions. Like everything, keep a balance and not allow an invasion of uncontrolled tourism but also economic die and socially leave the area. Utility companies, electric and telephone, have abandoned us enough already.

Finally we can offer internet service via wifi. It is not very powerful but it works.

Puebla de Sanabria

The town and reference of the area is the town of Puebla de Sanabria, is a medieval city that retains a castle with walled citadel in very good condition, is currently almost all rehabilitated. It is a city that you must know, ask at the Tourist Office (if you get up the hill to her in the street De la Rua) for the opening hours of the Castle and you can explore an authentic fifteenth-century castle.

Also, in the back of the castle should visit the chapel of San Cayetano parish church and with a supposedly attributed to Titian of Venetian Renaissance school cool. It is assumed that by the way of Santiago and being sick stopped in Puebla and in gratitude for the care that helped him, painted the fresco above, this is what counts but do not know the authenticity of this fact.

The story of the two images of these Puebla de Sanabria Virgin is very curious. Thus, the Virgen del Azogue, was found in the woodshed of a family of the village and then taken to the sacristy of the church, where radiated light. Our Lady of Victories, was commissioned in Paris a famous craftsman, a sanabresa family. But at the same time, this craftsman had another important task for the Church of Good Success in Madrid, and at the end both works, the confusion came. Here, Puebla de Sanabria, came that she should go to Madrid, and vice versa, but no one wanted to change and everyone was happy with their lot.
It is the Virgin who has great devotion not only in the town but in many other towns in the region. Now, during the holidays, two giants, (El Chino and La Negra), remain nine days in the Church, accompanying Our Lady of Victories. A group of women from the Villa, called always Waitresses of the Virgin, are those that are responsible for preparing the image for the Ninth, and for the holidays, and that everything goes well in the procession.
As highly emotional and where really the devotion to Our Lady of Victories is act, we can cite the time the Salve, at the end of Day procession 8. It is the exaltation of Marian devotion where everyone participates and sings.

Puebla de Sanabria is listed as a town of cultural interest, during 2011 has been one of the European Capitals of Biodiversity. In addition to Puebla you will find towns almost always less than two kilometers from each other. To the right of this text you will see one of the buildings of Puebla, it is the pastry Tiano, now has another name, but for those who were years studying in Puebla always pastry Tiano. Swiss made the best scones I've ever tasted.

In the northern area of the region 13 km from Puebla de Sanabria is located NATURAL PARK LAKE SANABRIA, around Lake ……… our Lake. According to the experts they say, in the Upper Pleistocene (this is literally copied), 100,000 years ago, an impressive glacier with ice served more than 20 kilometers source to the current Lake Sanabria. Our hostel is located on the northwest shore of the lake, to reach us must walk the entire west bank. We presume to be inside the park, about 300m. Lake in the area where the Tera River flows, which largely feeds water into Lake.
